3 More Common Infant Parent Mistakes

As a new parent, you are bound to make mistakes. However, you can avoid some common parenting mistakes by educating yourself. In our last blog, we started going over some of these common missteps. In this blog, we will continue our list.

Neglecting your relationship with your spouse

It’s common for new parents to have marital problems, and that makes sense. Your priorities have shifted as your whole lives have changed, and it can be hard to figure out how to make time for each other. However, your relationship with your spouse is the foundation of your family, and should be treated as a priority. If possible, schedule a date night for once a week so you can reconnect and spend time with each other. Make spending time together a habit, and your marriage will flourish.

Not getting enough sleep

You may laugh; after all, who isn’t sleep deprived when they have an infant? In fact, it is estimated that you lose from 400 to 750 hours of a sleep in your first year as a parent. There is little that you can do about the fact that you will lose sleep, but you can strategize to get more sleep. You have probably heard the advice that you should nap when your child naps: take it. When you are sleep deprived, you cannot parent the way you want to. Whether you nap every day with your child, or just catch one, long nap on the weekend, prioritize making sure you get at least enough sleep to adequately function so you can enjoy this rewarding time of your life.

Trying to get back to your old life

It’s scary, but it’s true: your life will never be the same now that you have a baby. You may have believed that your life would be pretty much the same, plus baby, but that is not how it works, unfortunately. Trying to get back to “normal” is a fruitless endeavor because this is the new normal. While you may be in a rush to get back to work, get the house clean again, or lose the baby weight, being too lofty with these goals or expecting things to go back to the way they were is only going to disappoint you. Embrace change, and you and your baby will be much happier.
